GPT-3 was first launched in 2020, GPT-2 released the year prior to that, though neither were used in the public-facing ChatGPT system. Upon its release, ChatGPT’s popularity skyrocketed literally overnight. It grew to host over 100 million users in its first two months, making it the most quickly-adopted piece of software ever made to date, though this record has since been beaten by the Twitter alternative, Threads.

While the company works to stabilize compute requirements with daily fluctuations of users, there will be outages. Even if there isn’t an outage, users have reported that response times from ChatGPT can sometimes be slow – presumably if it is dealing with a large number of requests. One of the key differences between the free version and the paid versions is that the latter entitles users to priority processing speeds and GPT resources. The 4o-mini model can now generate images based on text prompts like the full GPT-4o model.
