The layer nobody looks at is the one that determines whether a coaster protects a table or damages it. Cork backing is not decoration and it fails in predictable ways.
What It Is There For
Two things. It keeps the cool underside of the stone off a finished surface, so condensation on the base never contacts the table.
And it provides friction, so the coaster stays put when a glass is lifted off it rather than coming up with the glass or skating across the table.
Why Cork Specifically
It is softer than any furniture finish, which means it cannot scratch one. It is compressible, so it conforms slightly and grips. It tolerates damp without degrading quickly. And it is cheap.
Felt does a similar job and holds grit worse. Rubber grips well and can mark some finishes over time. Cork is the reasonable compromise, which is why it dominates.
Full Backing Versus Dots
- Full cork bonded across the whole underside: no gaps, no contact with the table
- Four felt or cork dots: cheaper, and leaves most of the base exposed
- Dots drop off individually, which produces an uneven coaster
- A missing dot puts the hard base directly on the wood
- Full backing distributes load rather than concentrating it on four points
The distinction is visible in listing photographs and it is worth checking. Sets specifying full cork bonded across the base, of the kind at thirsty-stone.net, are describing a construction difference rather than a marketing point.
Grit Is the Real Hazard
The one way a well-made coaster scratches a table. Cork is soft, but a piece of grit embedded in cork is not, and it acts exactly like sandpaper under a rotating glass.
Coasters that live outdoors, on a patio or a garden table, collect dust and grit continuously. Brushing the undersides every few weeks eliminates the problem.
Indoors it matters less and still matters, particularly on a floor-level coffee table.
How Cork Fails
It lifts at a corner, usually where moisture or heat has attacked the adhesive. A dishwasher does this reliably, which is one of the main reasons stone coasters should not go in one.
It also compresses and goes fuzzy on all-cork coasters, but a bonded backing layer on a stone coaster generally either holds or lifts rather than wearing out.
Re-Bonding a Lifted Corner
The most common coaster repair and an easy one. A thin bead of clear PVA or contact adhesive along the lifted section, pressed flat under a stack of books overnight.
Not superglue. Cyanoacrylate goes brittle and telegraphs through the cork as a hard ridge, which then presses into the table finish, converting a cosmetic problem into a damaging one.
Keep It Dry
Cork tolerates damp and does not enjoy being permanently wet. Coasters air dried flat rather than stacked wet keep their backing considerably longer.
Check It Occasionally
Turning a set over once a year takes a minute and catches a lifting corner before it becomes a detached piece of cork and a scratched table.
